When someone says “trust your gut”, they don’t literally mean your stomach. So what is the gut? In the world of health, nutrition, and “ugh-why-am-I-so-bloated,” your gut means your entire gastrointestinal tract (GI tract). That’s the:
- Stomach (the acid pit)
- Small intestine (where most nutrients are absorbed)
- Large intestine / Colon (your body’s compost bin)
- Plus, gut-adjacent organs like the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder
But the gut isn’t just plumbing. It’s home to trillions of bacteria, fungi, and microbes—aka your gut microbiome—which help you digest food, regulate your immune system, and even tweak your mood.

What The Heck Is… A Quickfire Gut Glossary
If you’ve ever Googled your weird gut symptoms (we all have), here’s a cheat sheet for what’s actually going on:
✅ The Gut
Not just your stomach. It’s your entire digestive system, stretching from your mouth to your… um, final exit point. Includes the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and your gut microbiome—the ultimate freeloaders who keep you alive.
✅ Bloating
That swollen, stretched, or tight feeling in your belly. It’s not just feeling full—bloating usually means:
- Gas buildup (from digestion or swallowed air)
- Slow digestion
- Food intolerances
- Or your gut just being a drama queen that day
You might also be farting more than usual or hearing weird gurgling sounds that you pretend weren’t yours.
✅ Brain Fog
When your brain feels like it’s moving through treacle. Brain fog makes you:
- Forget things mid-sentence
- Zone out in meetings
- Wonder if your brain is actually powered by a dial-up modem
Causes of brain fog:
- Gut health imbalances (thanks, microbiome)
- Blood sugar spikes & crashes
- Poor sleep
- Stress & anxiety
- Eating foods that don’t agree with you

✅ The Microbiome
Your gut’s very own petting zoo of bacteria, fungi, and microbes. They:
- Help digest food
- Produce vitamins
- Support your immune system
- Possibly decide your mood (rude, but true)
Feed them fiber, avoid junk, and they’ll (mostly) behave.
✅ Indigestion
That burning or gassy discomfort in your upper belly. Usually comes from eating too much, too fast, or living off spicy ramen and regret. Different from bloating—it’s higher up and usually paired with heartburn.
Is Bloating Just… Farts Waiting to Escape?
Kind of—but not entirely.
Bloating can be caused by:
- Excess gas (from digestion or swallowed air)
- Fluid retention
- Constipation
- Inflammation in the gut
- Or your gut microbes going, “Let’s mess with Karen today.”
Letting some gas fly might help a little (no shame here), but persistent bloating could mean something’s off with your digestion or microbiome.
TLDR: The Gut & Bloating Cheat Sheet
Term | What It Means |
---|---|
The Gut | Entire digestive tract + microbiome |
Bloating | Swollen, tight belly with gas, discomfort |
Brain Fog | Sluggish thinking, forgetfulness, poor focus |
Microbiome | Trillions of helpful (mostly) gut microbes |
Indigestion | Burning, gassy upper belly pain |
When To Actually Worry
If bloating, brain fog, or gut drama is:
- Chronic
- Painful
- Or comes with sudden weight changes
👉 Go talk to an actual doctor. We make jokes here, but this isn’t medical advice. Just good, squishy content.

Alex Keane is a health writer and gut health researcher with a personal mission: help people stop feeling like garbage for no clear reason. After years of dealing with brain fog, digestive issues, and 3am anxiety spirals, Alex started digging into the connection between the gut and the mind — and never looked back.
When not writing about microbiomes, Alex is usually found experimenting with fermented foods, walking obsessively, or trying not to buy more supplements off Instagram.
Alex is not a doctor, and that’s probably for the best.
